TranSelect®

TranSelect® lets you use suitable alternative word translations instead of those suggested by the machine translation. You can choose alternatives for the current sentence or the entire text. The grammatical structure is corrected automatically. For example, if you choose Flieger instead of Flugzeug as the translation of plane, das Flugzeug is replaced by der Flieger.

How it works

The function TranSelect® lets you choose between two different word alternatives. Once you have chosen an alternative, you can decide whether this translation should always be used or only for this sentence by right-clicking and selecting either Use this translation or Always use this translation from the context menu. The system will save your choice for the next occasion and will automatically follow it with a grammatically correct translation in the target text.

You can repeat the process with a different choice, for example if you mistakenly made a wrong choice. If you make a new translation without making a new choice you return to the original state, so with a new translation after a wrong choice you again see the suggested machine translation.

If you switch off the display of word alternatives after completing the replacement, you are presented the appropriately optimized text without further commentary.

When choosing alternatives you can use not only words from the system dictionary but also words from the statistical dictionary, which contains additional translations based on statistical information extracted from large volumes of text and which may offer relevant alternatives in the given contexts (Translate → Translations Options→ Also use alternatives from the statistical dictionary).

You can display information about the source of a suggested translation by selecting in the same menu the option Highlight → Show alternatives from the statistical dictionary.

Note that grammatically correct replacement also means that if necessary the context of the new translation will be adjusted too. For example, if you choose Spielerin instead of Spieler you will get for dem gesetzten Spieler the alternative translation der gesetzten Spielerin.

Entries from the statistical dictionary can sometimes lead to errors, because in this case their source may have left them with too little grammatical information.

Note too that not all of the displayed alternatives can be selected. If the system has too little information about exactly how the alternative should be inserted, the word cannot be selected. This is often the case, for example, if an alternative is a different type of word that would require excessive adjustments in the target text.

If you choose an alternative from the statistical dictionary, you can use the function AutoLearn<word> to insert this word into your user dictionary.
